House passes defense bill with stronger language on maintaining US troops in Korea

The U.S. House of Representatives passed an annual defense policy bill on Wednesday that tightens restrictions on reducing the number of U.S. troops in South Korea.

The House voted 216 to 212 to approve the nearly $1.15 trillion National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2027. The bill prohibits the use of funds authorized by the act or otherwise made available for fiscal years 2026 or 2027 to reduce U.S. Forces Korea troops below the current level of 28,500.

The legislation also calls for reinforcing the South Korea-U.S. alliance, enhancing mutual defense cooperation and affirming the United States' extended deterrence commitment. It came amid speculation that the Trump administration might consider troop adjustments in the region.

The bill must still undergo further congressional procedures, including reconciliation between House and Senate versions, before finalization.
