Les cavaliers doivent s'échauffer, puis passer au pas entre les barres en réalisant de larges serpentines avec une incurvation uniforme dans les virages. Après avoir atteint l'extrémité, un demi-tour aux trois quarts permet de revenir franchir les barres avant de répéter l'exercice dans le sens opposé.
