Juan Soto homer lifts Mets to 5-4 win over Cardinals

Juan Soto hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning to give the New York Mets a 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday afternoon at Citi Field.

Soto crushed a hanging sweeper from reliever JoJo Romero into the visiting bullpen. The blast was his 14th of the season and came after he had gone 3-for-32 without an extra-base hit since the start of June.

The Mets had trailed after an early flurry that included five home runs in the first two innings. Jared Young tied the game in the fifth when he drove in Soto, who had doubled.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Soto wants to be the biggest at-bat in any situation. Reliever Luke Weaver added that if he were creating a player in a video game he would simply pick Soto.

The win came while the Mets remain in last place in the National League East and with star shortstop Francisco Lindor still out with a strained left calf.
