Logan Webb is preparing to make his fifth consecutive Opening Day start for the San Francisco Giants against the New York Yankees at Oracle Park on Wednesday. The right-hander recently returned from the World Baseball Classic, where he pitched for Team USA. Giants manager Tony Vitello praised Webb as a leader.
Logan Webb spoke in Scottsdale, Ariz., ahead of the Giants' Cactus League finale against the Guardians. He reflected on his World Baseball Classic experience, where he made his final start for Team USA in the quarterfinals in Houston. Webb traveled with his teammates to Miami for the semifinals and final at loanDepot park, despite the team's loss to Venezuela in the championship game. > “I think it was great for baseball, just in general,” Webb said. “The whole experience, the whole environment. I made some friends for life. I had a blast. Obviously, it didn't end how we wanted it to, but I had a ton of fun.” Now focused on the regular season, Webb expressed excitement for his Opening Night assignment. > “I’m super excited,” he said. “It seems like the vibes here are really good right now. ... It's going to be a fun team.” This marks Webb's fifth straight Opening Day start, the second-longest streak in Giants history behind Juan Marichal's six. He could join Marichal and Madison Bumgarner as the only pitchers with at least five such starts in the San Francisco era. > “No matter what happens in my career, I can say I started five consecutive Opening Days for the San Francisco Giants,” Webb noted. In 2025, Webb posted a 3.22 ERA over an MLB-high 207 innings, finishing fourth in National League Cy Young voting. First-year manager Tony Vitello highlighted Webb's leadership: > “You want your players to reflect who you are. I think he's a great leader in general, but it makes me feel like I'm leading because he's leading.” Webb, who played alongside Aaron Judge for Team USA, anticipates competing against the Yankees captain. > “We're the Giants, we’ve got to give them a show, too,” he said.
