Royals agree to one-year deal with outfielder Starling Marte

The Kansas City Royals have reached an agreement on a one-year Major League contract with veteran outfielder Starling Marte, pending a physical. The deal, reported on Saturday, aims to add depth and a right-handed bat to the team's outfield for the 2026 season. Marte, a 37-year-old two-time All-Star, brings experience despite recent injury challenges.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Sources informed MLB.com on Saturday that the Royals are in agreement with Starling Marte on a one-year Major League deal. This addition provides outfield depth and a right-handed option for 2026. The agreement awaits a physical examination, expected within the next few days. The Royals have not officially confirmed the move and will require a 40-man roster adjustment once finalized.

Marte, a 14-year veteran and two-time Gold Glove winner, spent the last four seasons with the New York Mets. Injuries hampered his time there, limiting him to 396 games due to issues including groin problems, a neck strain, migraines, and a bone bruise in his right knee. In 2025, he appeared in 98 games, serving as designated hitter in 77, and recorded a .270/.335/.410 slash line.

The Royals had previously explored trading for Marte, but his health issues prevented deals. Talks accelerated Friday night, as first noted by reporter Yancen Pujols. With left-handed hitters like outfielders Kyle Isbel and Jac Caglianone, plus catcher/DH Carter Jensen in their lineup, the team sought balance against left-handed pitchers. Right-handed outfielder Lane Thomas offers versatility across positions, while Marte could fill corner outfield spots, DH duties, or serve as a late-game bench option.

Marte's career splits are balanced, with a .785 OPS against right-handers and .770 against left-handers. Over 1,530 games, he has posted a .285/.342/.440 slash line, 163 home runs, and 39.8 bWAR. If productive, he could secure more playing time beyond matchup roles.
