Marte, a 14-year veteran and two-time Gold Glove winner, spent the last four seasons with the New York Mets. Injuries hampered his time there, limiting him to 396 games due to issues including groin problems, a neck strain, migraines, and a bone bruise in his right knee. In 2025, he appeared in 98 games, serving as designated hitter in 77, and recorded a .270/.335/.410 slash line.
The Royals had previously explored trading for Marte, but his health issues prevented deals. Talks accelerated Friday night, as first noted by reporter Yancen Pujols.
