Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf struck a Detroit Lions fan with a punch during the first half of their Week 16 matchup at Ford Field. The incident occurred during a timeout for an injury and has prompted NFL review for potential discipline. The fan, who was ejected, claimed he taunted Metcalf by using his full name.
The altercation unfolded in the second quarter of the Steelers' 29-24 victory over the Lions on December 21, 2025, as captured by CBS cameras. It happened behind the Pittsburgh bench during a stoppage caused by cornerback Brandin Echols' groin injury, which sidelined him for the remainder of the game. Metcalf, interacting with a fan in the stands, reached up, grabbed the individual, and delivered what appeared to be a quick jab to the face before walking away.
The fan, identified as Ryan Kennedy by the Detroit Free Press, provided his account shortly after. "What, my full name isn't DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf," Kennedy said. "He doesn't like his government name. I called him that and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt. I'm a little shocked. Like everyone's talking to me. I'm a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby." Kennedy, who described himself as the "Biggest Detroit Lions Fan Ever that got attacked by DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf," was ejected from the stadium following the exchange.
CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore noted that officials did not witness the off-field incident, so no in-game penalty was issued. "Because the officials did not see this -- and you wouldn't expect them to from where DK Metcalf was, it's not something they can weigh in to from an officiating standpoint. I have been notified, though, that will be delivered to compliance with the NFL, and they'll address it at that point," Steratore explained. The league is expected to review the footage, potentially resulting in a fine or suspension for Metcalf.
Former NFL wide receiver Nate Burleson commented at halftime: "Listen, there’s some stuff that people, fans can say to you to get you outta character. But DK, come on man. I don’t know the details, but you cannot let someone get in your head to the point where you go over there, talk to them, grab them, and then what looks like throw a jab."
Metcalf, in his first season with the Steelers after a March trade from the Seattle Seahawks, leads Pittsburgh with 55 catches for 808 yards and six touchdowns entering the game. He recorded one reception for five yards on three targets during the matchup. The win improved the Steelers to 9-6, keeping them atop the AFC North ahead of their Week 17 visit to the Cleveland Browns.
