A powerful storm named Amy is heading towards Sweden and is expected to arrive over the weekend. It will bring strong winds and rain, resulting in gloomy autumn weather. Meteorologists warn of potential disruptions to traffic.

Storm Amy, which formed over the Norwegian Sea, is moving eastward towards the Swedish coast. According to the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), the storm is expected to reach southern Sweden late Friday evening and continue inland on Saturday. Winds could reach 20-25 meters per second in gusts, particularly in Skåne and along the east coast.

'We recommend avoiding unnecessary travel over the weekend, especially by boat or in exposed areas,' says meteorologist Anna Sjöström at SMHI. Rainfall amounts could reach 30-50 mm locally, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.

The background to the storm is a deep low-pressure system that developed rapidly over the Atlantic. Earlier in the week, similar weather was reported in Norway, where Amy already caused power outages. In Sweden, the southern and central parts will be primarily affected, while the north may avoid the worst winds.

Other sources mention a storm called Humbert, but it appears to refer to a separate low-pressure system further south, with no confirmed link to Amy. The event resembles previous autumn storms like Alfrida in 2019, which caused extensive damage. Authorities have issued a yellow warning for the affected regions.

The storm is expected to subside on Sunday, but aftermaths may linger with cloudy weather and temperatures around 5-10 degrees.
