Le grand maître suédois Axel Smith prévoit de disputer 49 parties d'échecs à l'aveugle simultanément le 7 mai à Lund, en Suède. Cette tentative vise à battre le record du GM Timur Gareyev tout en sensibilisant le public à une campagne climatique contre l'extraction de tourbe fossile.

Âgé de 40 ans, Smith, qui est également entraîneur et auteur d'ouvrages sur les échecs tels que "Pump Up Your Rating", mènera cette simultanée lors du tournoi d'échecs TePe Sigeman dans sa ville natale de Lund, près de Malmö. Il possède une expérience limitée du jeu à l'aveugle, n'ayant disputé que 15 parties en 2011, et s'est préparé en testant un système de mémorisation personnel basé sur des images pour les échiquiers, les ouvertures et les cases.
