Thailand's 'Girl From Nowhere' series gets Japanese adaptation

Thailand's mystery-thriller series 'Girl From Nowhere' is receiving its first international remake in Japan. Titled 'Transfer Student Nanno,' the six-episode production will stream on Fuji TV's FOD platform starting April 24. The adaptation reimagines stories from the original's first season in a Japanese school setting.

The Japanese adaptation, 'Transfer Student Nanno,' is a Fuji Television production developed with GMM Studios International. It draws from Season 1 of the original Thai series, with each of the six episodes directed by a different filmmaker: Tsutsumi Yukihiko, known for the '20th Century Boys' live-action trilogy; Kumakiri Kazuyoshi, director of 'My Man'; Yoo Youngseon, who helmed 'The Wrath'; and Hatanaka Miyuki, creator of 'Kimbap and Onigiri: Two in Love, Alike Yet Different.'

Nakajima Arisa, a 20-year-old actress, makes her screen debut as Nanno, the enigmatic transfer student who uncovers moral failings in her surroundings. Each episode is set in a different school, exploring themes of ambition, secrets, and corruption.

The original 'Girl From Nowhere,' created by Sour Bangkok, premiered on Thailand's GMM25 in 2018 and gained popularity on Netflix. Its 2021 sequel, 'Girl From Nowhere 2,' reached Netflix's Top 10 in markets including Brazil, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and various Southeast Asian countries. A new entry, 'Girl From Nowhere: The Reset,' is currently airing weekly on Channel ONE HD 31 and the oneD platform in Thailand, with international availability on Netflix.

Ekachai Uekrongtham, chief content officer and managing director of GMM Studios International, stated: “We’re thrilled to launch the ‘Girl From Nowhere’ franchise outside Thailand for the first time in a key market like Japan, in partnership with Fuji Television. This first-ever international remake welcomes a new Nanno, brought to life by revered and visionary directors, into our ever-growing story multiverse as part of our broader strategy to grow the series into a global IP and drive multi-platform transmedia expansion.”

Fuji Television executive producer Hobara Kenichiro commented: “Like the Seven Deadly Sins, every facet of human desire and darkness unfolds within the closed world of a school in ‘Girl From Nowhere.’ When I first watched the original Thai series, I felt it was a completely new kind of drama – one that cannot be found in Japanese school series: a bold and original school mystery thriller. Now, before me stretches a vast ocean of limitless possibilities for drama. With courage, we set sail on a voyage to create a Japanese adaptation worthy of the original.”

GMM Studios International holds exclusive international distribution and licensing rights for the adaptation outside Japan, with ONE31 handling global sales. The Bangkok-based company, led by Uekrongtham, produces scripted series and features, including Netflix's 'Doctor Climax' and 'Girl From Nowhere 2,' as well as Amazon MGM's 'Previously Saved Version.'
