The body of a 25-year-old woman missing since Boxing Day from Rönninge station has been discovered following an intensive search. A 26-year-old man with a prior kidnapping conviction was arrested nearby and confessed to involvement in her murder and kidnapping. A memorial is growing in Salem as the community mourns.
After the 25-year-old woman vanished from Rönninge station at around 01:26 on December 26 following a night out in Stockholm, relatives found key evidence including her headphones, zip ties, a hammer, and cable ties about 500 meters away. This spurred a major police operation with cordons, helicopters, and volunteers, as previously reported.
Technical leads identified a 26-year-old man, previously sentenced to two years and four months for attempting to kidnap a girl. Court records highlighted his pro-criminal attitudes, high recidivism risk, online searches for 'making someone unconscious' and 'how to rape,' threats against a prison warden, and multiple name changes after release.
After 10 hours of surveillance, he was arrested Saturday evening in a forest several miles from Rönninge, near the woman's body. He confessed on site. A 45-year-old man was detained on suspicion of kidnapping. Police confirmed the murder on Sunday after 2.5 days.
Police commander Max Åkerwall noted leads from relatives and tips. Grief engulfs Rönninge and Salem, with flowers and candles at the town square. Residents said: 'It's so incredibly sad,' and 'Our children walk home the same way.' Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described it as 'nightmare-like' and offered sympathies.
