Azam TV network disruption threatens Kenyan league broadcasts

Azam TV, the sole broadcaster for Kenya Premier League matches, has announced network disruptions that could jeopardize coverage of this weekend's fixtures. The issues stem from protests rocking Tanzania during its general elections. The company is working to resolve the problems amid a communication blackout in the country.

Concern is growing over the broadcast of Kenya Premier League (KPL) matches scheduled for this weekend after Azam TV, a Tanzania-based company holding the exclusive airing rights, reported network issues. In a statement released on Friday, October 31, 2025, Azam TV informed customers of the disruptions, which coincide with widespread protests in Tanzania linked to the ongoing general elections.

The broadcaster stated: “Dear valued customers, we are experiencing network issues that are affecting Azam TV services. We are currently working to resolve the issue.” It added: “Kindly be patient with us as we resolve the issues.” These problems arise as Tanzanians protest against incumbent President Samia Suluhu, with demonstrations erupting on Wednesday in major cities. Protesters were seen destroying ballot boxes and clashing with police, leading to a 6pm curfew imposed by authorities. The unrest continued into Thursday, October 30, with clips showing crowds chanting 'We want our country back.' Schools have been closed, civil servants instructed to work from home, and reports indicate several protester deaths. The Tanzanian military has been deployed, and internet observer Netblocks confirmed a nationwide communication blackout.

Despite the turmoil, the KPL plans to proceed with game week seven, featuring nine fixtures across Saturday and Sunday. Kakamega Homeboyz lead the table with 13 points after six games, followed by Gor Mahia on 12 points. Defending champions Kenya Police sit 16th in the relegation zone after a poor start to the season.

The disruption poses a significant challenge for fans relying on Azam TV for live coverage, highlighting the vulnerabilities in regional broadcasting arrangements.
