Former president Gabriel Boric raised the possibility of another presidential run during stops in Wales and London. His remarks, less than 100 days after leaving office, drew responses from Chile's Frente Amplio, center-left and right-wing politicians.
Boric spoke on May 31 at the Hay Festival in Wales and told journalist Jon Lee Anderson that “yo podría ser candidato, no sé, pero tiene que ser una discusión colectiva”. The next day at the British Library in London he told Isabel Hilton that his name “va a ser uno de los que esté en discusión” in the future. Frente Amplio lawmakers welcomed the comments. Ignacio Achurra said Boric “es un referente y un liderazgo fundamental” and that “nos alegra que no dé por cerrada la conversación”. Lorena Fries noted that “este no es el momento de empezar a levantar candidaturas” and that decisions would be made collectively. The center-left expressed caution. Héctor Ulloa of the PPD said “resulta muy prematuro discutir sobre candidaturas presidenciales” and that the focus should remain on opposing President José Antonio Kast’s government. From the right, RN’s Diego Schalper criticized the idea and said the center-left “se tendría que poner detrás de alguien de la izquierda radical” for a third consecutive time.
