Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc set the fastest time in opening practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix. His benchmark of 1m19.075s proved over four tenths quicker than Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
Leclerc headed the session after establishing his time early on before a red flag interruption. Verstappen finished second with 1m19.559s, while Lewis Hamilton took third place for Ferrari.
Lance Stroll brought out the red flag after 36 minutes when his heavily updated Aston Martin AMR26 suffered a suspected rear suspension failure. The Canadian spun on the exit of Turn 2 and parked his car, halting the session for nine minutes.
Several teams introduced Hungary-specific updates, including McLaren's floor revision. Five rookies took part in the compulsory FP1 sessions, with Frederik Vesti seventh for Mercedes and Leonardo Fornaroli 16th for McLaren.
Carlos Sainz was summoned to the stewards following the session for impeding Verstappen.
