Charli XCX released the reflective single Camera on July 21 along with a music video directed by Aidan Zamiri and starring Vincent Cassel. The track serves as the latest preview of her upcoming album Music, Fashion, Film, due July 24 via Atlantic.
The song features mid-tempo guitar-led electronic pop as Charli questions her move toward acting. In the lyrics she sings: “It makes me question what I’m doing / Do I wanna make music / Am I being fucking stupid / If I try to be a girl on the screen when I’m turning 34?”
The one-shot video shows Cassel struggling through a film set scene after a fiery car crash, with Charli appearing as the director. Cassel references his La Haine pose by pointing a finger gun at his head. Zamiri, a frequent collaborator, also shot the album artwork featuring John Cale, Marc Jacobs and Martin Scorsese.
Charli gave the track its live debut at a Brooklyn pop-up show earlier this month. She is scheduled to headline Reading & Leeds next month and will begin a North American arena tour with Underscores on September 11 in Philadelphia.
