Presidents José Antonio Kast and Rodrigo Paz held three meetings in 2026 focused on security and migration, while Bolivia prepares to appoint an ambassador to Chile.
The leaders met in January in Panama, in March in Miami and on June 30 in Asunción. In these encounters they addressed border security, irregular migration and organized crime.
Bolivian Foreign Minister Fernando Aramayo stated on July 2 that his government will appoint diplomatic representatives to Chile and other priority countries in the coming weeks. He clarified, however, that naming ambassadors does not immediately restore full diplomatic relations, which have been suspended since 1978.
Analysts Marcelo Pérez and Alfonso Díaz noted that the current bilateral agenda prioritizes practical cooperation over the maritime demand. Daniela Franco warned that Bolivia’s internal economic crisis could limit further progress.
Both countries maintain consular ties that facilitate trade and citizen assistance, although structural obstacles remain for complete normalization.
