China-central asia forum focuses on human rights progress via high-quality development

The fourth China-Central Asia Human Rights Development Forum convened on Thursday to explore advancing human rights through high-quality development and regional cooperation.

The forum gathered experts, scholars and government representatives from China and Central Asian nations.

Li Hongkui, vice president of the China Foundation for Human Rights Development, called for closer alignment of the Belt and Road Initiative with Central Asian development strategies to support human rights.

Akmal Saidov, director of Uzbekistan's National Center for Human Rights, stressed that regional exchanges can yield practical solutions to shared human rights challenges.

Chinese Ambassador to Uzbekistan Yu Jun noted the expanding China-Central Asia cooperation mechanism and expressed readiness to build a closer community with a shared future.

Zhao Leji, chairman of China's National People's Congress Standing Committee, reaffirmed commitments to high-standard opening-up and domestic demand in a keynote speech Thursday at the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2026 plenary. The event in Boao, Hainan province, themed "Shaping a Shared Future: New Dynamics, New Opportunities, New Cooperation," drew over 1,600 representatives from more than 60 countries and regions.

At a news conference in Beijing, Liu Jieyi, spokesman for the fourth session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, stated that China will deepen high-level opening-up and accelerate free trade zone development to stabilize economic growth amid rising global uncertainties. He highlighted that China's economy demonstrated 'remarkable resilience and vitality' over the past year despite a complex external environment.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Beijing with Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, National Leader of the Turkmen People, as the two sides pledged to strengthen alignment of development strategies, expand natural gas cooperation and broaden practical collaboration in areas like connectivity. Berdimuhamedov's three-day trip marks the first visit to China by a foreign leader since this year's national two sessions.

China has outlined plans to enhance infrastructure in its border regions, including completing two highways spanning its nine land-border provinces, advancing an east coast highway, and upgrading three routes into Tibet. The initiative, which details policy priorities for the rest of the decade, focuses on improving connectivity and mobility in strategic areas.

At the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress, Chinese lawmakers are set to deliberate a draft environmental code to solidify the legal foundation for modernization featuring harmony between humanity and nature. Spokesperson Lou Qinjian said on Wednesday that the code will make environmental legislation more systematic, integrated, coordinated, and timely. China's environmental legal system has basically taken shape, supported by an institutional framework for ecological conservation.

Ethiopia's Finance Minister Ahmed Shide met with Liu Yunfeng, deputy director general of China's International Development Cooperation Agency, in Addis Ababa. The discussion centered on advancing Ethiopia's development priorities through bilateral cooperation. Both nations agreed to expand ties in key sectors including infrastructure and health.

The prime ministers of Singapore and South Korea will attend this month's Boao Forum for Asia, joining a growing list of world leaders visiting China this year. The annual conference is scheduled for March 24 to 27 in Boao, Hainan province.
