NewsNation anchor Chris Cuomo has advised Democrats against pursuing another impeachment of President Donald Trump, even if they gain congressional control in the 2026 midterms. He argued that such efforts would fail without sufficient votes for removal and only divide the country further. This comes amid some Democrats already introducing impeachment articles.
On a recent Tuesday broadcast of "The Chris Cuomo Project," Cuomo addressed the possibility of Democrats regaining power in the House or Senate during the 2026 midterm elections. He expressed concern over reports that Senate Republicans, including Ted Cruz, had warned Trump about potential losses and daily impeachment attempts by Democrats.
Cuomo emphasized the political nature of impeachment, noting that while the House can initiate proceedings, removal requires a supermajority in the Senate—more than a simple 50-plus-one vote. "You do not have the votes you need to remove him. It will not happen. So why put us through it?" he said. He referenced the previous two impeachments of Trump, questioning whether they had benefited the country.
Cuomo's comments highlight ongoing discussions within Democratic circles. Representatives Al Green of Texas and Shri Thanedar of Michigan have each filed articles of impeachment against Trump. An opinion piece in The Hill on Monday advocated not only for impeachment but also for expanding the Supreme Court.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi offered a more measured view in a recent interview, stressing the need for substantial justification. "That’s not an incidental thing you say—‘We’re going to [impeach].’ No, there has to be cause," she stated. "There has to be reason."
As Democrats intensify their campaign for congressional majorities, these voices reflect a mix of urgency and caution regarding accountability measures against the president.
