Clay Holmes throws 40 pitches in first rehab session

New York Mets pitcher Clay Holmes completed his first simulated game session on Friday as he recovers from a fractured right fibula. The right-hander threw 40 pitches to rehabbing infielder Marcus Semien.

Holmes suffered the injury on May 15 when struck by a 111.1 mph line drive from Yankees outfielder Spencer Jones at Citi Field. He had not faced hitters since then.

The session took place in New York with Semien standing in the batter’s box but not swinging. Holmes reported no issues and said it felt good to see a hitter again.

Interim manager Andy Green noted that Holmes’ pitches moved well and that both players looked like themselves. Semien also took live batting practice later that day.

Holmes entered the season with a 4-4 record and 2.39 ERA in nine starts. His next step is expected during the All-Star break in Florida.
