Concerned Women for America urged major sports bodies including the NCAA and Olympic organizations to adopt mandatory SRY gene testing for athletes. The call follows the WTA's new eligibility policy announced this month. Penny Nance, the group's CEO, said the measure is needed for fair competition in women's events.
The WTA introduced its Women's Eligibility Policy requiring a one-time genetic screening test for the SRY gene. The test determines biological sex and can be done via cheek swab or blood test. Screening for players is set to begin later in 2026 with confidentiality protections in place.
Nance stated on July 22 that every sport governing body needs to institute the testing. She added that trans-identifying males have no place in women's sports and that it is unfair for women to compete against men.
Tennis figures reacted differently to the WTA move. Martina Navratilova welcomed the policy, saying the WTA is clear that only females can compete at the highest level of women's tennis. Billie Jean King called for no discrimination and continued support for transgender athletes.
