The Pittsburgh Steelers' decision to hire Mike McCarthy as their new head coach following Mike Tomlin's resignation has drawn positive reactions from key figures within the organization. Dick LeBeau, a legendary defensive coordinator who won a Super Bowl with the team in 2005, offered his full support during an interview on WMBS with George Von Benko.
“I think he’s an excellent coach. He’s had a lot of good success, a lot of good experience,” LeBeau said. He emphasized McCarthy's 13 years as head coach in Green Bay and five in Dallas, noting that such experience helps avoid early mistakes. “Most of coaching is your own personal experience and learning from your mistakes. Like it is for anybody that does any job.”
LeBeau highlighted the Steelers' roster strengths, including a solid offensive line and top pass rushers, as factors that could propel the team forward. The franchise has not won a playoff game since 2016, but LeBeau remains confident. “I’m very optimistic for the Steelers. I think that we get a couple breaks and get a couple spots filled in there that can put us over the top. We’ll be right back winning those playoff games this year.”
The hiring brings practical benefits as well. Under NFL rules, teams with new head coaches can begin Phase One of their offseason program earlier—on April 6 instead of April 20. This phase focuses on strength and conditioning, providing a head start for preparation ahead of the 2026 season.
Dan Rooney, the team's vice president and heir apparent, also praised McCarthy after participating in the interview process. “It was great to get to know Coach McCarthy through the interview process,” Rooney told NFL Network. “He’s just a special guy with an awesome coaching resume and has the right plan and vision for what the Steelers need right now. Really excited to get to work with him, and we’re jacked up for 2026.”
McCarthy, a Pittsburgh native, was selected from nine candidates, including three in-person finalists. Owner Art Rooney II prioritized his proven track record to avoid a rebuild and aim for immediate contention.
