Disney World installs shade canopies near Savi’s Workshop

Walt Disney World Resort has installed new canopies over the courtyard next to Savi’s Workshop in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The additions provide shade in areas previously uncovered by umbrellas or awnings. The build-your-own-lightsaber experience remains open with reservations required.

Construction walls and scrim appeared around the courtyard last August, with support poles added earlier this year. Guests recently spotted the purpose of the poles: several canopies strung between them. The first canopy went up on March 30, as reported by WDWNT on Wednesday, followed by more identical structures for heat relief in the concrete-heavy area of Batuu. Walt Disney World Resort has not publicly commented on the project, described as cosmetic refurbishment. Savi’s Workshop continues operating normally amid the changes. These updates coincide with plans to revise the Star Wars timeline at both Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disneyland Park. Half of Galaxy’s Edge will stay in the sequel era, while the other half shifts to the original trilogy, introducing characters such as Leia Organa, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Darth Vader to Batuu later this year. Disneyland Resort will make the change on April 29, though Walt Disney World has not announced a date.

Disney World and Disneyland experienced significant crowds on May 4th for Star Wars Day celebrations. Visitors flocked to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge areas, leading to busy walkways and notable ride wait times. Evening lightsaber gatherings drew even larger numbers.

Walt Disney Imagineering has filed a permit to install new set elements at the Alien Swirling Saucers ride in Toy Story Land. The work will be carried out by Icarus Exhibits, Inc. No specific details on the updates have been released yet.
