Fortnite returns to Apple App Store in most countries, but not Australia

Epic Games has restored Fortnite to the Apple App Store worldwide except Australia, following last year’s court ruling against Apple’s in-app payment rules.

Fortnite returned to the Apple App Store on May 19 in most countries, excluding Australia. Epic Games said the update follows its court victory over Apple and comes as the company prepares further legal steps on payment policies. The title was removed from the store in 2020 after Epic added its own payment system to avoid Apple’s 30 percent commission. A ruling last year first enabled reappearance in the United States and Europe. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney posted that the global return marks the start of the final phase in the Epic v Apple case, noting that regulators worldwide are watching and that Apple is under pressure to reduce its fees. In Australia, Epic won a separate case yet Apple continues to enforce its original terms; the game will stay out until acceptable terms are in place or a court intervenes. Fortnite had already returned to the Google Play Store earlier this year.

Google has reached a settlement with Epic Games to resolve their long-running antitrust dispute, paving the way for Fortnite's return to the Google Play Store worldwide. The agreement includes reduced fees for developers and support for third-party app stores on Android. Changes are set to roll out starting in June in select regions.

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear Apple's appeal in its long-running legal battle with Epic Games. The decision upholds a lower court finding that Apple violated an injunction by limiting third-party payment options on iOS devices.

Epic Games has announced that Fortnite's original co-op mode, Save the World, will become free-to-play starting April 16, 2026. This change comes as the company addresses declining engagement in its flagship title. The move aims to attract both veterans and newcomers to the survival crafting experience.

Epic Games announced the removal of three lesser-played Fortnite modes amid efforts to cut costs. Rocket Racing will end in October 2026, while Ballistic and Festival Battle Stage shut down on April 16. The decision follows layoffs of over 1,000 employees earlier this week.

Australian regulators are poised to require app stores to block AI services lacking age verification to protect younger users from mature content. This move comes ahead of a March 9 deadline, with potential fines for non-compliant AI companies. Only a fraction of leading AI chat services in the region have implemented such measures.
