Gerald Darmanin forgoes vacation to modernize justice after Lyhanna case

Invited on RTL Wednesday, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin announced he will skip summer vacation to reform justice methods, following failures exposed by Lyhanna's death.

Gerald Darmanin told RTL he will work every day to digitize court procedures and bring the Justice Ministry into the modern era. He criticized excessive use of paper and called for entering the 21st century rather than responding only with more staff.

The minister tied the decision to the death of Lyhanna, 11, whose judicial failures allowed main suspect Jérôme Barella to evade capture despite an earlier complaint. A report delivered to the government highlighted cumulative time losses and lack of procedure follow-up.

Separately, the Agen prosecutor released the autopsy report Wednesday, which does not establish the cause of death with certainty but confirms rape and marks highly suggestive of restraint injuries. Charges against Barella were expanded to murder of a minor under fifteen.

The justice and interior ministers announced measures on Sunday following the discovery of the 11-year-old girl’s body in the Gers. Gérald Darmanin ordered a review of 70,000 complaints involving children.

The murder of 11-year-old Lyhanna, whose body was found last Thursday in the Gers, has highlighted a rape complaint filed in August 2025 against main suspect Jérôme B. The complaint had not led to an arrest.

Elio Darmon, a key witness in the probe into ex-minister Robert Boulin's 1979 death, was found dead on April 1 at his home in Brandérion, Morbihan. An inquiry into the causes of death has been launched, with an autopsy scheduled. His testimony had revived the case in 2022.
