Google Play Books launches AI chatbot feature for ebooks

Google Play Books has introduced Book Insights, an AI-powered reading companion built with Gemini. The feature is available on select English titles.

The new tool offers features such as Catch Me Up, which provides a recap of content read so far. Readers can also ask questions during the experience, for example whether a character appeared earlier in the text.

Book Insights is designed to deliver spoiler-free responses by referencing only the portion of the book up to the current reading position. It is currently limited to select English titles that appear to be public domain works.

Google's press blog notes that generative AI remains experimental and may produce errors despite these safeguards.
