Google pulls AI-generated Disney videos from YouTube after IP infringement C&D

Following Disney's cease-and-desist letter, Google has removed dozens of AI-generated videos featuring Disney characters from YouTube, addressing claims of copyright infringement in hosting and AI training. This enforcement action continues Disney's aggressive IP protection strategy amid select AI partnerships.

In response to a cease-and-desist letter from Disney earlier in the week, Google removed dozens of AI-generated videos from YouTube by Friday, as reported by Variety and Deadline. The videos featured Disney characters including Deadpool, Moana, Mickey Mouse, and Star Wars figures.

The letter accused Google of 'infringing Disney’s copyrights on a massive scale,' citing both YouTube hosting of infringing content and use of Disney works to train AI models like Veo and Nano Banana. This follows Disney's recent C&D mentions in broader AI partnership announcements (see prior coverage on Disney-OpenAI deal).

Disney has pursued similar actions against other AI firms, including Character.AI, and ongoing suits against Hailuo and Midjourney. These steps highlight Disney's firm stance on IP amid generative AI growth, contrasting with strategic collaborations like its new OpenAI licensing agreement.

YouTube has terminated two popular channels that produced misleading AI-generated movie trailers, citing violations of its spam and metadata policies. The channels, Screen Culture and KH Studio, amassed over 2 million subscribers by posting fake trailers for non-existent films. This action follows earlier demonetization efforts and highlights tensions around AI content on the platform.

Disney and OpenAI have announced a three-year licensing deal starting in 2026, allowing the AI firm's ChatGPT and Sora tools to generate images and videos using Disney's intellectual property. This pact includes access to over 200 characters from Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel brands. The agreement highlights contrasting views on copyright between the entertainment giant and the AI company.

Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that the company does not plan to alter its intellectual property strategy despite ongoing competition involving Warner Bros. Discovery. This position was announced as part of recent corporate updates.

Google has announced that its experimental AI prototype, Genie 3, is now available to subscribers of its highest-tier AI plan. The tool allows users to generate and navigate interactive 3D worlds using simple text prompts. Previously limited to trusted testers, this expansion marks a step toward broader access for the 18-and-older audience.
