Government launches inquiry into healthcare journal systems

The government has decided to launch an inquiry into the regions' journal systems in healthcare. The announcement has sparked joy among doctors in Dalarna who have long criticized the Cosmic system.

Child doctor Torbjörn Hemberg described the reaction in an sms as “Now the accident commission is here!” He is one of five doctors who previously demanded an external investigation into the procurement and introduction of Cosmic in Region Dalarna.

Senior physician Kim Busk Madsen at the eye clinic in Falun hopes the inquiry will bring change. “I hope this never happens again”, he says, stressing the importance of listening to those who use the systems.

Regional leadership in Dalarna has mixed reactions. Elin Norén (S) welcomes the assignment to the e-health authority but believes the state also needs to review legislation on complex procurements. Opposition councillor Björn Ljungqvist (M) calls the announcement unfortunate and highlights the need for digitalisation.

Region Dalarna's regional council has decided to allocate up to 30 million kronor extra to the care choice for child and youth psychiatry (BUP) in 2026. The investment aims to retain care providers. The opposition warns that the funds will not solve the root problems.

Following months of criticism over the Cosmic system in Region Dalarna—including doctors' demands for a failure commission and reports of patient safety risks—the government has tasked E-hälsomyndigheten with a national failure investigation of the journal systems market. Region councilor Elin Norén (S) welcomes the move but calls for reforms to public procurement law.

An update on the patient death in Region Dalarna previously probed for links to the Cosmic electronic health record system: a woman died waiting for aortic aneurysm surgery after the system delayed her summons by weeks, leading to a rupture. The region's internal investigation confirms Cosmic's role, with the case reported under Lex Maria.
