H-NEW conducts counselling for drug consumers in Hyderabad

The Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing held a counselling session for drug users and their families, emphasizing rehabilitation over punishment. Over 40 attendees participated in the event at Basheerbagh, linked to a local drug case.

On Tuesday, the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) organized a counselling and awareness programme at the Old Commissioner of Police office in Basheerbagh. The event targeted drug consumers and their families, focusing on rehabilitation and behavioural change instead of mere punishment.

This session stemmed from a case registered at Langar Houz police station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. Officials identified more than 100 drug consumers in the case, with 40 attending alongside parents and relatives.

The programme aimed to educate parents about the dangers of drug abuse, help them spot early signs of dependency, and highlight the importance of family support in recovery. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Task Force and H-NEW) Gaikwad Vaibhav Raghunath addressed the group, stating that drug abuse is "not merely a law-and-order issue but as a serious social and public health concern."

He encouraged parents to stay vigilant, foster open talks with children, and collaborate with police to curb drug activities. The DCP also outlined legal penalties for drug abuse and trafficking.

Parents engaged actively, voicing worries and asking questions. Mr. Raghunath advised monitoring children's behaviour closely and seeking prompt professional help for any unusual signs. He underscored that shared responsibility and ongoing parental efforts are key to a drug-free society, aligning with the city police's push for positive lifestyle changes.
