Heavy rains trigger floods and rescues in Mexico City

Torrential rains on Monday, May 11, flooded roads in southern and western Mexico City, prompting emergency rescues and reviving criticism over drainage maintenance.

The downpours overwhelmed key arteries. In Tlalpan, the Periférico and Picacho Ajusco intersection was closed in both directions after an 80-meter-long flood more than 70 centimeters deep swept vehicles away.

In the Lomas de Padierna neighborhood, water submerged parked cars. Emergency crews rescued passengers from a stranded gas tanker in an underpass in Álvaro Obregón. Officers from the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana helped people trapped in their vehicles, according to videos shared on social media.

The Secretaría Integral del Agua attributed the reported overflow at presa Becerra to garbage buildup that blocked water flow. Social media users criticized the lack of drainage repairs and waste collection, recurring problems during the rainy season.
