Heavy rain causes two accidents on southern Minas highways

Two traffic accidents occurred on highways in southern Minas Gerais on Tuesday (March 31) due to heavy rain, injuring six people. A rollover happened on BR-267 in Poços de Caldas, and a head-on collision on BR-491 between Guaxupé and Juruaia. Firefighters and police responded to the scenes.

Around 1:40 p.m., the Corpo de Bombeiros Militar responded to a rollover on BR-267 at km 533, near the Universidade Federal de Alfenas campus in Poços de Caldas. The female driver lost control during intense rain, veering off the road and tumbling into a ravine. She was found conscious with no serious injuries and taken to the local UPA.

Polícia Militar Rodoviária closed the road and assisted in the rescue, with a tow truck removing the vehicle.

About 100 km away, a head-on collision between a Ford Ka and a Mitsubishi ASX took place on BR-491 between Guaxupé and Juruaia. Witnesses said one driver lost control due to the rain, possibly aquaplaning. In the Mitsubishi ASX, the driver had minor abrasions treated by firefighters, and a passenger, unconscious with suspected cranial trauma, was airlifted by Samu.

The Ford Ka carried a man and two women; one female passenger had a suspected leg fracture, with others showing no apparent injuries. All victims were transported to Santa Casa de Guaxupé. EPR Vias do Café and Polícia Militar managed vehicle removal and traffic, as authorities investigate the causes.
