Indie films open in limited release this weekend

Several independent films began limited runs in New York and other cities this weekend. The releases include a psycho-sexual thriller and a documentary on musician Linda Perry timed to her new album.

Blue Film, the debut feature from director Elliott Tuttle, opened at the IFC Center in New York and Landmark Sunset in Los Angeles. The film stars Reed Birney and Kieron Moore and follows a camboy who meets an anonymous client with ties to his past. It premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and holds a 92 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Kane Parsons' directorial debut Backrooms opened strongly at the domestic box office this weekend. The A24 release, based on the filmmaker's popular YouTube series, earned between $76 million and $79 million.

Silent Friend posted the strongest limited debut among indie films this weekend with a $74,400 gross from two New York City theaters. The film earned a per-theater average of $37,200, the highest for a non-English language release in recent months. Blue Film followed with a solid $31,000 from two engagements.
