IOC apologizes for incorrect South Korean flag display at Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has apologized after the South Korean flag was displayed incorrectly during the medal ceremony for the women's 3,000-meter relay at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. The Taegeuk symbol at the center of the flag was tilted counterclockwise. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) requested a correction from the IOC.

The ceremony took place at the Milano Ice Skating Arena on Thursday Korean time, following the South Korean women's short track speed skating relay team's gold medal win. The Taegeuk symbol in the center of the Taegeukgi, the national flag, appeared tilted counterclockwise on the screen, sparking concern.

The KSOC stated that it provides the organizing committee with the official government-approved Taegeukgi design file and national anthem audio for every Olympic Games. In response, the IOC and the organizing committee acknowledged the error, apologized, and promised immediate corrective action.

This incident highlights the importance of accurately representing national symbols at the Olympics. The issue is expected to be resolved promptly following the KSOC's request.

The International Olympic Committee has provisionally lifted its suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, saying the Russian body has removed from its membership regional sports organizations in Ukrainian territory. The move could ease the path for broader Russian participation in qualification events for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, though final decisions on Russian participation and symbols will depend on individual sports federations and IOC policies.

On June 16, protesters blocking access to the Olympic Handball Gymnasium in Seoul's Jamsil area continued a 12-day standoff by preventing sports officials from entering. Prime Minister Kim Min-seok vowed a stern response to illegal acts.
