Jacob Misiorowski leads MLB with record pitching velocity

Jacob Misiorowski has emerged as the hardest-throwing starting pitcher in Major League Baseball this season. His average fastball velocity stands at 99.6 mph, well ahead of other starters. This performance comes as he prepares to face the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday at Wrigley Field.

Misiorowski has thrown 233 pitches at 100 mph or faster this year. All other starting pitchers combined have thrown 149 such pitches. He also accounts for 45 of the 102 mph or harder pitches recorded by starters in the pitch-tracking era since 2008, with most occurring in just six weeks of the current season.

Major League Baseball pitchers are on pace for another record season in fastball velocity. The average four-seam fastball sits at 94.6 mph, up slightly from last year. This continues a long-term shift toward higher speeds across the league.

Spencer Strider made his Grapefruit League debut for the Atlanta Braves, pitching two innings in a 7-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday in Sarasota, Florida. The pitcher, recovering from a second major elbow surgery, focused on fastball shape rather than velocity, which averaged 93.1 mph. Strider expressed confidence in his progress despite fan expectations.
