Jannik Sinner wins Wimbledon but returns original trophy

Jannik Sinner defended his Wimbledon title with a victory over Alexander Zverev on Sunday. Minutes after lifting the trophy on Centre Court, the original was collected by All England Club officials in line with club tradition.

Sinner defeated Zverev after dropping the opening set of the final. The Italian claimed his second consecutive SW19 title and extended his lead in the Big Titles race to 17 against Carlos Alcaraz on 15.

Following the match, Sinner was shown the updated honours board by AELTC chair Debbie Jevans. He later held the trophy on the club balcony before Sally Bolton retrieved the original.

The All England Club has followed this practice since the 1880s after William Renshaw claimed earlier trophies outright. Winners receive a smaller replica instead.

The same process occurred with Iga Swiatek after her 2025 final win. Sinner will next compete at the US Open, which begins on August 23.
