Johan Pennerborn, the 54-year-old former Färjestad coach, has been appointed as the new head coach of German DEL2 club Ravensburg Towerstars. The club announced the move on Wednesday, replacing Bo Subr. Pennerborn returns to coaching after a season away from the game.
Ravensburg Towerstars, competing in Germany's second-tier DEL2 league, introduced Johan Pennerborn as their new head coach. Sports director Marius Riedel praised the hire, stating, “With Johan, we have brought an experienced coach to Ravensburg who not only has an excellent track record in professional ice hockey but also fits us perfectly on a personal level. We took our time deliberately with the decision and had many discussions to find the right coach. Johan emerged as the favorite, and I am very happy that he is now part of the Towerstars family.” The club confirmed Pennerborn steps in after Bo Subr's departure, aiming to maintain their fast and aggressive style. Riedel added, “We will retain our fast and aggressive hockey style, and I am convinced that Johan will inspire our players.” Pennerborn, who last coached Färjestad before their 2022 SM-gold win, has since led teams in Graz, Austria, and JYP in Finland's top league. He outlined his approach: “I want to give the team a complete game on the ice, one that allows us to dictate the action with and without the puck. This includes high speed, physicality, and puck control.” This appointment marks Pennerborn's return following a season outside professional hockey.
