Magistrates accept roles on judicial ethics council

Four magistrates chosen by electronic draw have accepted seats on the Judicial Ethics Council. The body was created after the Audio case crisis and will begin work on July 1.

Following the April 29 electronic draw, magistrates Omar Astudillo, Marisol Ponce, Sergio Pizarro and Jessica Bascuñán accepted their positions. They form the initial four-member judicial composition of the council.

The body was created in response to scandals such as the Audio case, which involved former Supreme Court justice Ángela Vivanco. Its Code of Ethics, approved in November under Minister Adelita Ravanales, established this preventive and advisory entity.

The fifth member will be an academic in philosophy or applied ethics. The four judicial members will select this person by simple majority after an open nomination period extended to Cruch universities.

The council must be fully constituted by June at the latest. Its functions will officially begin on July 1, with the goal of resolving queries on judicial conduct and promoting standards of probity.
