Man arrested over hit-and-run death of 84-year-old woman in Ibaraki Prefecture

Police arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of dangerous driving resulting in death after he struck and killed an 84-year-old woman with his minivan in Chikusei, Ibaraki Prefecture.

The incident occurred at around 3:55 p.m. on Saturday when Hideki Akimoto from Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture, hit Tomoko Yanaka as she crossed the street. The woman was taken to a hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival. Police located the minivan with a shattered windshield in Yuki City using street surveillance camera footage.

Akimoto was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving resulting in death. He has denied the allegation. A breathalyzer test reportedly showed alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit.

The arrest was carried out by police in Chikusei, Ibaraki Prefecture.
