President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. hosted tennis star Alex Eala at Malacañang on July 13, 2026, and conferred a presidential citation on her for reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Marcos welcomed Eala with visible excitement and described the meeting as a highlight of his presidency. He praised her as a true fighter and champion who embodies the best qualities of Filipinos.
"You remind us why we are a great race," Marcos said. He added that he is a real fan and hopes to watch her play in a tournament someday.
Eala thanked the president and said she carries the Philippine flag wherever she goes. She received the citation for her historic Wimbledon run, which included a win over former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
Marcos also noted Eala's new career-high ranking of No. 28 and her continued pride in her roots. Eala gifted the president and First Lady Liza Marcos with caps and signed tennis balls.
