Merkel urges more european diplomatic efforts in ukraine war

Angela Merkel called for stronger diplomatic efforts by European states in the Ukraine war during a conference. She also voiced support for military aid to Ukraine.

The former German chancellor spoke at the WDR Europe forum held during the digital conference Republica. Merkel stressed that diplomatic efforts represent the other side of the coin alongside deterrence through military support.

US President Donald Trump has so far positioned himself as the main mediator. Merkel urged Europe to step up, saying a lack of self-confidence would be a mistake.

She recalled her direct talks with Vladimir Putin after the annexation of Crimea. She had not considered sending a substitute mediator at the time. "One has to take it into one's own hands," Merkel said. Putin had previously suggested Gerhard Schröder as a possible mediator.
