Mexico keeps tariff edge under T-MEC after new US duties

Mexico confirmed that 85 percent of its exports to the United States will remain tariff-free under the T-MEC, despite new 10 percent duties on 60 countries under Section 301.

The Economy Ministry said the shift from Section 122 to Section 301 tariffs, effective Friday, July 24, 2026, leaves Mexico’s treatment unchanged. Secretary Marcelo Ebrard stated that exports meeting the trade deal stay at zero tariff and that Mexico will not retaliate.

Ebrard said escalating the dispute would be counterproductive because the United States is the world’s largest economy. “If you put tariffs, they will put more,” he said in an interview.

At the same time, the third round of USMCA review talks ended in Mexico City with progress on steel, aluminum and supply chains. Both sides scheduled a fourth round in Washington for September 2026.
