Netflix sets April release for chess scandal documentary

Netflix has announced that its documentary 'Untold: Chess Mates' will premiere on April 7, revisiting the 2022 controversy between Hans Niemann and Magnus Carlsen. The film examines the fallout from Niemann's victory over Carlsen at the Sinquefield Cup and their subsequent encounters. Niemann stated the documentary will shift the narrative around the scandal.

The announcement comes as part of Netflix's Untold series, with new installments beginning March 31. The episode focuses on the 2022 Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis, where Hans Niemann, entering as a late replacement, defeated then-world champion Magnus Carlsen in 57 moves during Round 3. Carlsen withdrew from the tournament and publicly accused Niemann of cheating, sparking intense debate in the chess community.

Chess.com later released a report claiming Niemann had likely cheated in more than 100 online games, including those with prize money, though it found no conclusive evidence of over-the-board cheating in the match against Carlsen. Niemann denied the allegations, filed a $100 million lawsuit against Carlsen, Chess.com, and others, which was settled in 2023.

In response to the Netflix announcement on February 24, Niemann issued a statement reflecting on the ordeal. "When the world piled on smear campaigns, coordinated attacks, strategic silence: no one stood with me. Not a single institutional ally. False narratives spread across major platforms tested my reputation and my career at the highest level," he said. He added, "Others had state machines, endless sponsors, safety nets. I had grit, intellect, and the unshakeable American spirit inside. I rose, anyway."

Niemann also expressed optimism about the documentary's impact: "Before the Netflix spotlight shifts the narrative, I will select one premier American company as my long-term partner: securing the necessary resources to become World Champion. American greatness deserves American enterprise behind it."

Netflix's production team tracked both players across several events to capture the rivalry's evolution. Cameras were present at the 2024 Speed Chess Championships in Paris, where Carlsen defeated Niemann 17.5–12.5 in the semi-final—their first meeting since the scandal. Additional filming occurred at the Champions Chess Tour Finals in Toronto and the FIDE World Blitz Championship in New York City, where Carlsen again won against Niemann in the quarter-final. Norwegian media reported Netflix's presence at Carlsen's wedding in Oslo in January 2025.

The synopsis describes the film as following Niemann's efforts to clear his name and pursue a rematch with Carlsen. Carlsen has not commented publicly on the documentary.
