New York Mayor praises Sócrates during Brazil World Cup opener

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani highlighted former Brazilian player Sócrates in a video released on the day of the national team's debut against Morocco.

In a message published on Saturday (13), Mamdani cited Sócrates while awaiting the match between Brazil and Morocco. He described the athlete as the midfield maestro who played in the 1970s and 1980s and captained the team at the 1982 World Cup.

The mayor, an opponent of President Donald Trump, mentioned the period of Brazil’s military dictatorship and the Democracia Corinthiana movement. “At Corinthians, the club he captained, Sócrates and his teammates took part in what ordinary Brazilians dreamed of: democracy,” he said.

Mamdani also suggested food options for fans: coxinha at Bar Goiano for Brazil supporters and a dish at Tatara Kitchen for Morocco fans. The match takes place in East Rutherford, New Jersey, under coach Carlo Ancelotti.
