Cliff Fletcher, the longtime NHL executive who guided the Calgary Flames to the 1989 Stanley Cup and acquired Mats Sundin for the Toronto Maple Leafs, has died at age 90.
Fletcher passed away on Friday. He built his reputation as one of the league's top general managers during a career that included stints with the Atlanta Flames, Calgary Flames, Tampa Bay Lightning, Arizona Coyotes and Toronto Maple Leafs. He relocated the franchise from Atlanta to Calgary and assembled the roster that captured the Stanley Cup in 1989. Fletcher also brought Sundin to Toronto in 1994 and later hired Anders Hedberg as assistant general manager. Fletcher returned to the Maple Leafs in 2007-08 as interim general manager after John Ferguson was dismissed. He remained with the organization as an advisor until his death.
