The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has recovered key evidence from the scene of Monday’s train derailment on the Warri-Itakpe rail corridor. Five people died and dozens were injured in the incident near Agbor in Delta State. Investigations by multiple agencies are underway to determine the causes.
The derailment occurred on Monday on the Warri–Itakpe Train Service corridor near Agbor. Four coaches capsized and one derailed. A total of 482 people, including 442 passengers, were on board. Five deaths were recorded, comprising four adults and one infant. About 40 people sustained injuries, with 24 or 25 classified as serious. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau recovered major evidence including witness accounts, operational records and maintenance documents. Director-General Alex Badeh Jnr expressed condolences and said the investigation would be thorough and evidence-driven. The bureau is working with the Nigerian Railway Corporation, the Federal Ministry of Transportation and other agencies. Permanent Secretary Funsho Adebiyi of the Federal Ministry of Transportation also extended condolences. Rescue operations were completed by 6:30 p.m. on the day of the accident with support from the Delta State Government, NEMA and other responders. The ministry and the NRC have launched their own investigation. The NSIB said its role focuses on improving safety and not assigning blame. A final report with findings and recommendations will be released upon completion of the investigation.
