Olimpia Coral advocates for Ley Olimpia against digital violence

Activist Olimpia Coral Melo discussed in an interview the impact of Ley Olimpia, a set of reforms that penalizes the non-consensual sharing of intimate images in Mexico. Born from her own abuse experience in 2013, the law aims not only to punish aggressors but to prevent future victims of digital violence. Coral stressed the need to hold digital platforms accountable and shift cultural perceptions on gender.

In 2013, after the non-consensual sharing of her intimate sexual content, Olimpia Coral Melo launched a movement that led to Ley Olimpia, a pioneering set of legislative reforms against digital violence. The law recognizes as a crime the dissemination, production, or storage of intimate images without authorization, extending even to content altered by artificial intelligence. "Ley Olimpia is a political movement seeking no more victims of digital violence", Coral stated during her appearance on Café Milenio.

Coral highlighted challenges in justice application, such as impunity and difficulties in obtaining evidence, as well as the opaque responsibility of companies like Meta. "Who has the biggest pack in the world? Mark Zuckerberg", she questioned, referring to 'packs groups' as digital sexual exploitation markets. The law has influenced regulations in 39 countries and federally in Mexico covers digital alterations.

In her personal experience, Coral recounted transforming her trauma into activism: "Today my only justice is algorithmic, because whenever you search my name, I'm no longer the 'Gordibuena de Huauchinango', but Olimpia of the Law". She commented on President Claudia Sheinbaum's case, who suffered sexual abuse, media violence, and digital revictimization, despite her explicit request not to share the material.

Coral called on men to join social change based on "non-toxicity", viewing women as allies rather than threats. Her work underscores that the digital realm is real and violates human rights, urging society to eradicate the normalization of non-consensual pornography.
