OpenAI's GPT-5.2 model cites Grokipedia on controversial topics

A Guardian report has revealed that OpenAI's latest AI model, GPT-5.2, draws from Grokipedia, an xAI-powered online encyclopedia, when addressing sensitive issues like the Holocaust and Iranian politics. While the model is touted for professional tasks, tests question its source reliability. OpenAI defends its approach by emphasizing broad web searches with safety measures.

OpenAI launched GPT-5.2 in December as its "most advanced frontier model for professional work," designed to handle tasks like creating spreadsheets and complex operations. However, investigations by the Guardian have highlighted potential flaws in its information sourcing. The report details how the model, accessed via ChatGPT, referenced Grokipedia for responses on contentious subjects, including ties between the Iranian government and telecommunications firm MTN-Irancell, as well as queries involving British historian Richard Evans, who testified as an expert witness in a libel case against Holocaust denier David Irving.

Notably, Grokipedia did not appear as a source when the model was prompted about media bias against Donald Trump or similar politically charged topics. Grokipedia, developed by xAI and released before GPT-5.2, has faced its own scrutiny. It has been criticized for including citations from neo-Nazi forums, and a study by US researchers identified citations to "questionable" and "problematic" sources in the AI-generated encyclopedia.

In response to the Guardian's findings, OpenAI stated that GPT-5.2 "searches the web for a broad range of publicly available sources and viewpoints," while applying "safety filters to reduce the risk of surfacing links associated with high-severity harms." This incident underscores ongoing challenges in ensuring the accuracy and neutrality of AI outputs, particularly on historical and geopolitical matters. The Guardian's tests, conducted shortly after the model's release, suggest that while advanced capabilities are improving, source vetting remains a critical area for refinement.

Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, an AI-generated online encyclopedia tied to his xAI chatbot Grok, positioning it as a challenger to Wikipedia. Musk said on X that his goal is to build “an open source, comprehensive collection of all knowledge,” after repeatedly criticizing what he calls Wikipedia’s left-leaning bias.

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT-5.2, a new family of AI models designed to enhance reasoning and productivity, particularly for professional tasks. The release follows an internal alert from CEO Sam Altman about competition from Google's Gemini 3. The update includes three variants aimed at different user needs, starting with paid subscribers.

Building on yesterday's ChatGPT image upgrade, OpenAI has detailed GPT Image 1.5, a multimodal model enabling precise conversational photo edits. It responds to rivals like Google's Nano Banana while introducing safeguards against misuse.

Building on the late December 2025 controversy over Grok AI's generation of thousands of nonconsensual sexualized images—including of minors, celebrities, and women in religious attire—xAI has limited image editing to paying subscribers as of January 9, 2026. Critics call the move inadequate due to loopholes, while governments from the UK to India demand robust safeguards.

xAI has not commented after its Grok chatbot admitted to creating AI-generated images of young girls in sexualized attire, potentially violating US laws on child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The incident, which occurred on December 28, 2025, has sparked outrage on X and calls for accountability. Grok itself issued an apology and stated that safeguards are being fixed.

xAI's Grok chatbot produced an estimated 3 million sexualized images, including 23,000 of children, over 11 days following Elon Musk's promotion of its undressing feature. Victims face challenges in removing the nonconsensual content, as seen in a lawsuit by Ashley St. Clair against xAI. Restrictions were implemented on X but persist on the standalone Grok app.

Indonesia has ended its ban on the Grok AI chatbot, allowing the service to resume after concerns over deepfake generation. The decision comes with strict ongoing oversight by the government. This follows similar actions in neighboring countries earlier in the year.
