PAA merges with Ruto's UDA, skips 2027 candidates

Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) has decided to join President William Ruto's UDA party and will field no candidates in the 2027 general elections. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced the move after talks with Ruto. It follows a meeting of Coast leaders with the president at Mombasa State House.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, a founder of Pamoja African Alliance (PAA), announced the party's decision to join United Democratic Alliance (UDA). The move followed discussions between Kingi and President William Ruto. “In 2022 we campaigned extensively here selling PAA and had candidates in various seats. Even our Kilifi gubernatorial candidate was lawyer George Kithi. I know some will ask what now, but today I stand before you to explain about 2027,” Kingi said addressing Kilifi residents. He pledged to support Sports and Youths Minister Salim Mvurya in securing 3 million votes from the Coast region. “I will tour all Coast counties to encourage residents to get IDs so we get all votes. Inherit the votes that Coast people gave ODM leader, the late Raila Odinga,” he added. Kingi praised UDA's popularity in Kilifi, highlighting Aisha Jumwa's bid for the county governorship against ODM's Gideon Mung’aro. “We want UDA to gain more popularity. We want UDA to win many political seats; we have just one year to build grassroots strength,” he stated. He warned leaders against party-hopping and vowed to secure the Coast against opposition led by Rigathi Gachagua. This comes two days after Ruto met Coast leaders at an Iftar event in Mombasa State House. The president urged cooperation and an end to wrangling, particularly between Mining and Blue Economy Minister Hassan Joho and Mvurya over the deputy presidency slot.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki visited Kenya's Coast region and faced political rivalry between UDA and ODM figures eyeing his position ahead of future elections. He called on residents to re-elect President William Ruto and announced Pamoja African Alliance's merger with UDA.

President William Ruto on Sunday, February 22, urged United Democratic Alliance leaders in Kiambu County to set aside their political differences and focus on serving residents. Speaking at the Jesus Compassion Ministries anniversary in Ruiru, he warned against blame games over the Githurai demolitions and promised road developments. He also announced the launch of a Thika-Nairobi expressway in September 2026.

ODM and UDA are engaged in a fierce dispute over zoning political strongholds ahead of the 2027 elections. ODM leaders demand exclusive candidates in their areas, while UDA politicians reject limits on voter choice.

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has stated clearly that the Deputy President's position will not be discussed in its political talks with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). This relates to Kithure Kindiki and calculations for the 2027 elections. UDA has emphasized its stance against sharing that role.
