Pat Perez contends at Senior PGA Championship after LIV exit

Pat Perez, a former LIV Golf player, has made a strong comeback at the Senior PGA Championship, tying for ninth after two rounds. The 50-year-old opened with a three-under 69 and followed with a 70 at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida. He trails co-leaders Scott Hend and Brian Gay by five strokes.

Pat Perez enjoyed a successful PGA Tour career with three wins, 64 top-10 finishes and nearly $30 million in earnings over 515 starts. In 2022, at age 46, he joined Dustin Johnson's 4Aces team in LIV Golf, calling it 'like winning the lottery.' He finished no better than 28th individually over three years and was cut after placing 48th in 2024, shifting to a commentator role and quitting golf entirely for nearly a year from January to September 2025. 'Didn’t even think about it,' Perez said of avoiding clubs during that time. 'I never thought I’d be able to play on the tour again.'

Bryson DeChambeau defeated Jon Rahm in a sudden-death playoff to claim the inaugural LIV Golf South Africa title at the Club at Steyn City in Johannesburg. Both finished regulation at 26-under par, with DeChambeau birdieing the par-5 18th in the first extra hole from a challenging mud-ball lie. The event drew massive crowds in a festival atmosphere with music and local culture, selling out tickets up to R75,000 and marking one of LIV Golf's biggest successes, with a confirmed return in April 2027.

Patrick Reed, former LIV Golf player and past Masters champion, detailed his reasons for leaving the league during a pre-Masters press conference in Augusta, Georgia. He cited a desire for more family time and the adrenaline of traditional tournament golf as key factors. Reed remains suspended from the PGA Tour until late summer but plans to return later this year.
