Pierre-Yves Bournazel hints at his stance in Paris mayoral election runoff

In a book set for release on Friday, Horizons candidate Pierre-Yves Bournazel, backed by Macronists, provides hints about his relationship with Rachida Dati, making a rally to the LR candidate in the 2026 Paris mayoral runoff unlikely. Declared in June 2025 and polling third, he emerges as a potential kingmaker between Dati and Emmanuel Grégoire. Privately, he voices a desire to avoid such a decision.

Pierre-Yves Bournazel, a close ally of Édouard Philippe and supported by Renaissance, announced his candidacy for Paris mayor in June 2025. Elected as a Paris councilor since 2008, he polls third for the March 2026 municipal elections, potentially succeeding Anne Hidalgo of the Socialist Party. Rather than aiming for victory, he positions himself as a kingmaker between the two frontrunners: Rachida Dati for Les Républicains and Emmanuel Grégoire, from the outgoing majority.

Publicly, Bournazel upholds firm neutrality, avoiding any preference between Dati, aligned with his political family, and Grégoire, with whom he maintains constructive opposition. Privately, he states he will « do everything to avoid ending up in this position » of having to choose. His book « The Battle for Paris », releasing Friday, delves into his relationship with Dati, the 7th arrondissement mayor, who remains bitter over the presidential party's refusal to back her in 2020. At that time, Macronist candidate Agnès Buzyn stayed in the second round, weakening Dati's performance.

Dati's teams claim that « voting for Bournazel is voting for Grégoire ». Grégoire, meanwhile, described Bournazel as « interesting » in July. In early November, a key Paris Socialist advocated « leaving the door open », recalling a potential union with the MoDem in 2008.

In his first major campaign rally on January 14, 2026, Emmanuel Grégoire, head of a left-wing union list in Paris, sharply criticized his rival Rachida Dati, accusing her of wanting to turn the capital into a « facho lab ». Earlier that day, outgoing mayor Anne Hidalgo defended her record without mentioning her former first deputy, stressing that Paris must remain a left-wing city.

Maud Gatel, MoDem's leader in Paris, announces her endorsement of Rachida Dati, the Republicans' candidate, for the 2026 Paris municipal elections. She believes Dati is the only one who can enable a change from the left. This support highlights convergence on priorities like debt reduction and climate adaptation.

Former Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoë joined socialist candidate Emmanuel Grégoire at the Auguste Blanqui market in the 13th arrondissement on January 11, 2026, to boost his profile ahead of the March municipal elections. Highly recognized by Parisians, Delanoë introduces Grégoire as a candidate of great qualities. This effort aims to build voter trust in a challenger who remains little known.

Lucie Castets, former Nouveau Front populaire candidate for Matignon in 2024, has announced joining the left-wing union list led by Emmanuel Grégoire for the Paris municipal elections. She holds an eligible position and does not rule out an alliance with La France insoumise. This move aligns with her commitment to left-wing unity against the threat of a right-far-right alliance.

Ahead of the 2026 municipal elections, Les Républicains and Horizons are forging natural local partnerships, while La France insoumise pursues a solitary strategy against the united front of other left-wing forces.

Gilles Bourdouleix, mayor of Cholet since 1995, announced on January 16 his bid for a sixth term in the municipal elections. Convicted on January 29 for the fatal fireworks accident on July 14, 2022, he faces an unusually hostile environment with seven competing lists. One of them is led by former deputies aiming to replace him.

In Le Havre, Edouard Philippe, mayor since 2010 and presidential candidate, will face a united left list in the March 2026 municipal elections. His opponents are banking on the weariness of his long tenure following comfortable re-elections in 2014 and 2020. The leader acknowledged that a local defeat would harm his national ambitions.
