Pirates rally in 10th to defeat Yankees 5-3

The Pittsburgh Pirates scored twice in the top of the 10th inning to beat the New York Yankees 5-3 in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole retired the first 14 batters he faced and struck out 11 over seven innings. He allowed three runs on four hits, including home runs by Nick Gonzales and Jacob Gonzalez.

The Pirates took a 3-0 lead before Ben Rice tied the game with a three-run homer in the seventh. Pittsburgh then broke the tie in the 10th when Jared Triolo and Jake Mangum delivered RBI singles off Fernando Cruz.

Cole said his performance was a good step forward. Manager Aaron Boone noted that Cole had everything working, including his slider and curveball.

Pirates manager Don Kelly praised Cole's stuff and command. Gonzales added that the team put good swings on pitches and generated offense throughout the lineup.
